Kwangtung River Turtles: Chinemys nigricansCategory: Asian Water Turtles Experience Level: Intermediate [?] Description<* An important note - because keepers all over the world have fully recognized that this species is essentially extinct in nature, their price has - and will continue to rise very quickly. *>Here is another species who's survival is threatened by over collecting for the Chinese food markets. Only because of the hard work of some better American breeders that this rare species is available. Recently, many keepers ( the world over ) have recognized the rarity and importance of this species - so their value has appropriately risen - most turtle experts agree that this development is long over due...Reaching only six inches in length, Vietnamese ponds make fine turtles for indoor set ups. They like to bask, and make good use of deeper water. They are omnivorous, taking both plant and protein foods. A tropical turtle, they do well in outside ponds in summer months, or in warmer climates. Found only in Southern China and Northern Vietnam, this turtle is probably the best example of over collecting for the Chinese food market. A recent scientific expedition studying this species turned up only one male turtle, after several weeks of searching. Kwangtungs are virtually extinct in the wild; thankfully this species is bred by a few better breeders here in the US. A highland species, Kwangtungs used to inhabit mountain streams, and juveniles greatly resemble their American counterparts - North American wood turtles . Gray to almost glossy black on top, they have brilliant orange to yellow belly patterns as hatchlings and juveniles - to help camouflage, these bright colors gradually fade as they become adults. Omnivorous, they take pellets, greens, worms, insects and fish. Given that this is a species on the verge of extinction, (and already extinct in the wild) Kwangtungs are a very important species for conservation minded keepers to work with - availability is extremely limited. * Remember, each turtle order comes with a free starter sample of the same Turtle diet that your Turtle has been raised on - this will last one small turtle a few weeks - to order larger quantities, see the lower left side of this page. * Restricted StatesOR Terms & ConditionsPlease read and review carefully before purchasing.
